Writing historical fiction encompasses many factors. One way I engage my readers is through food. Literature and food have close connections and bring people together in settings we can relate to. The experiences of cooking in a kitchen, eating a family meal, or preparing for a life event bring the story alive and connect your audience.
Bringing in food plots, adding saucy ingredients, or spicy cuisine can also be a parallel for the characters in your story. It invites the reader to show emotion with what is taking place within the story. My creative skills are expanded as I question and research the culinary delights of a region.
As a historical writer, I continue experimenting with recipes and cooking methods and incorporating them into a storyline. It may have a deeper meaning or just plain trivial. More importantly, it connects my readers with a well-rounded narrative.
