The importance of travel in historical writing is underscored when I am on a journey, and the destination forces special attention to that place. Travelling to immerse in the culture requires a closer look, listening more clearly, tasting more carefully, and continually considering the entire experience.
The result is a deeper and richer experience when I explore behind the scenes of a restaurant, shop, or event. It is essential when taking advantage of particular sites or museums. I take time to speak with museum curators, shopkeepers, chefs, and local people, all of whom make connections to the travel experience.
When I write about travel experiences abroad and then add these to my stories once I am back home, it affects, broadens, and expands the importance and deepens each journey. More importantly, it will elevate the historical writing experience.
