83 Years Ago – September 29-30, 1941: Babyn Yar. Babyn Yar is a ravine in the capital city of Kyiv. It is the site of one of the largest massacres of the Second World War. The perpetrators were from the mobile killing units of the German army called the Einsatzgruppen. The victims were Ukrainian men, women and children, mostly Jews, Soviet prisoners of war and other groups of people singled out by the German army.
At the beginning of the German occupation of Kyiv, two explosions occurred which destroyed the German headquarters and killed many of their soldiers and officials. The Jews were blamed for what was later identified as mines left behind by Soviet soldiers and officials. Everyone was rounded up and the Sonderkommando 4a escorted them to Babyn Yar.
